There are so many things to love about winter…cozy nights by the fire, the excitement of the holidays, comfort food + hot cocoa… But for our skin, it’s hardly the favorite season. The cold, dry weather can be harsh and we need to take some extra steps to protect our skin these next few months.
We spoke to Dr. Dendy Engelman, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, to get some of her top skincare tips for this winter.
Keep your lips hydrated and pretty with a multitasking balm. The skin of our lips is delicate and almost always exposed to the elements. This means that in the cold and dry winter months, our lips are one of the first parts of our body to start drying out, flaking and cracking. To prevent this, keep a hydrating balm on hand and reapply it all day long. I love Lano’s Tinted Lanolin Lip Balm ($13.50, lanolips.com) because it heals and protects lips with vegetarian lanolin, shea butter and vitamin E while adding a pretty tint of color – perfect for those who don’t want to sacrifice beauty for function.
Keep a facial mist at your desk for all day hydration. In the winter months, the harsh indoor heat can do a number on our skin. I keep the Orpheus Resurrection Bio-Luminous Dewy Essence ($65, Orpheus-Skin.com and Amazon), which contains deep-penetrating dual weight hyaluronic acid, at my desk to spritz when my skin is feeling in need of a boost of lasting hydration. This multi-correctional silky essence is formulated like a serum that replenishes, protects and adds an instant dewy glow.
Use gentler hand sanitizer that won’t strip your skin. While we’re all more conscious than ever about germs these days, winter is a time I find myself using a lot more hand sanitizer than usual. Because of their high alcohol content, hand sanitizers tend to be stripping and harsh on the skin, which is why I love the Touchland Power Mist ($9, Target, Ulta and Amazon). These moisturizing hand sanitizers are non-sticky and contain aloe vera to gently nourish and hydrate the skin. Plus, they come in 13 amazing fragrances and just launched a Disney collab–great for the kids!
