Alaska was a bucket-list trip for my husband and me, and we knew that a cruise would be the best way to experience as many destinations as possible. We set sail from Seattle, making our way through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Alaska. Our itinerary took us to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay, and a short stop in Victoria, BC. travel to alaska
One of the biggest highlights of our trip was Glacier Bay—it felt like we were in another world. From Juneau, we took a speedboat to Tracy Arm Fjord and South Sawyer Glacier, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The turquoise waters, stunning waterfalls, bear sightings, and the most unreal-looking blue glacier made it an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend this excursion!
In Skagway, we took a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railway, which would have been incredible if not for the rain and low visibility. Despite the weather, zip-lining through the Tongass Rainforest in Ketchikan and trying our luck at gold panning in the Klondike were both really fun!
Before our trip, I did a ton of research and kept seeing the same advice about Alaska’s unpredictable weather. But I didn’t fully realize just how rainy it would be or how much that would impact our plans. Even though we lucked out with what’s considered great weather for Alaska, a few of our excursions still got canceled— including a sea plane tour and a high-speed Coast Guard boat wildlife trip. We managed to find some last-minute alternatives, but they weren’t what we had originally planned.
My best advice- always research your excursions ahead of time and have a backup plan. We ended up spending a lot of time at different ports just trying to figure out what to do after cancellations, which could have been avoided with a little more planning. Whether it’s knowing other options in advance or just staying flexible, being prepared for changes can make a huge difference in making the most of your trip!

Packing Smart for Alaska in the Summer
One of the biggest takeaways from our trip was how important it is to pack correctly. Alaska’s summer temperatures can range from 50°F to 70°F, but it feels much cooler at sea. Here’s what I wish I had packed more of:
- Dress in Layers – A waterproof jacket, warm layers like fleece and sweaters, thermal base layers, comfortable pants, and a hat.
- Waterproof Pants – I only brought one pair and ended up wearing them almost every day over leggings. These are a must for outdoor excursions.
- Sturdy Footwear – Sneakers or waterproof hiking boots are ideal for excursions.
- Sunglasses & Sunscreen – The glare from the water and glaciers can be strong, even on cloudy days.
Excursions & Activities
- Book Excursions Early – Popular tours sell out fast, so it’s best to secure spots before your trip.
- Consider Independent Tours – Local operators in port cities often offer similar experiences at a lower price.
- Glacier Viewing – Bring binoculars and a good camera for wildlife and scenic shots.
Onboard & Port Tips
- Be Ready for Rain – Light rain showers are common and the weather changes quickly. A travel umbrella or packable rain jacket is useful.
- Souvenirs & Shopping – Alaskan ports have great local crafts, native art, and tax-free jewelry.
- Limited Wi-Fi & Cell Service – Connectivity is spotty, so download maps, books, and entertainment before departure.
- Bring Small Cash Bills – Some small vendors and tour guides appreciate cash for tips or purchases.
- Long Daylight Hours – Alaska gets up to 18 hours of daylight in summer. If you’re sensitive to light, an eye mask will help with sleeping.
Wildlife & Nature
- Look for Wildlife from the Ship – Keep an eye out for whales, sea lions, and bald eagles while cruising.
Despite the unexpected changes, our Alaskan cruise was unforgettable and an amazing experience. We’d love to go back someday with our kids when they’re a bit older and can join in on some of the more adventurous excursions. If you’re planning an Alaskan cruise, go prepared, stay flexible, and embrace whatever comes your way!
