Please meet the lovely Caitlin of The Bauble Collective. This mama has been designing jewelry since she was 6 years old after she received her first bead kit on her 6th birthday. Ever since, this Mama has been in-love with designing jewelry. Now she provides bead kits for others to enjoy during their birthday celebrations, as well as on the go bead kits for airplanes, road trips or a lazy day at home. Caitlin is all about bringing smiles and creative inspiration to kids ages 4 to 12. Find out who inspired this Mama of 3 to start this fun mobile birthday business, what advice she has for other Moms wanting to start their own business and where Caitlin and her family love spending time on the weekends in South Orange County.
Can you please share a bit about your family and why you choose to raise your family in Orange County?
I am a mom to three young kids (a 4 year old girl, a 2 year old boy, and an 8 month old baby girl). I am originally from San Francisco, and my husband is from Chicago. Both of us moved to Orange County on our own, and we fell in love with the weather, beautiful beaches, and great restaurants! Once we started having a family, we realized there is no other place we would want to raise our kids. We are very fortunate to live in such a special and beautiful place!
When did you start designing jewelry?
I started designing jewelry when I was 6. I was always curious how things worked as a child and would take things apart. The only problem was, I didn’t know how to put them back together. It drove my parents nuts! My mom started buying me DIY kits to keep my busy. On my 6th birthday, she gave me a bead kit, and I was instantly hooked! I stopped taking things apart and started making jewelry!
Why did you decide to start The Bauble Collective in Orange County?
I grew up going to bead shops and exploring what treasures they had. Unfortunately, a lot of those bead shops went out of business. Then one day I was at the park with my kids, and the idea came to me. Start a mobile jewelry company for kids! This way kids can still learn how to make jewelry with curated beads and kits!
What is the best age for children to have a jewelry party?
This is a hard question. It really is 4 and up. The younger kids love bigger statement beads and focuses on each bead (think lots of chunky sparkly hearts and flowers). By the age of 6/7, the kids start understanding patterns and try to actually create a pattern. And by age 9/10, the kids are creating pieces that go along with the current trends. It’s amazing to see the design process in each kid! I love seeing the kids creativity come to life!
What is your most popular or your favorite type of jewelry party to host?
I love the birthday kit parties! At each party, there is always a handful of kids that fall in love with jewelry making, so I love that they are able to go home with their own jewelry kit as a party favor. Also, if they have some favorite beads, I let them stock up their kit with them. It’s so fun them start collecting their own beads!
How does motherhood impact your work?
As a mom to three very young kids, it can be challenging finding time to get everything done for work while being fully engaged with my kids. I try really hard to have a schedule and to keep with it! I also do a lot of work after the kids bedtime. I’m lucky to have a supportive husband and an amazing babysitter to help with the schedule!
What piece of advice would you give to Moms trying to figure out how to start a business?
Just start! If you have an idea, if you feel the urge to create something, then do it! It won’t be perfect, but nothing really is. You will figure it all out and be able to curate it to fit your life as a mom. You won’t regret trying!
What is your favorite thing to do or place to go with your family in Orange County?
One of our favorite things to do is walk along the ocean pathway in Laguna beach then grab lunch. We finally are at a place where we can eat out with all three kids.
Where is your favorite date night spot with your husband?
We try and do date night once a month. Our favorite/go-to thing to do is go out to dinner. I know this sounds simple, but there’s a way to do it that is super fun for us! We start with a cocktail and appetizer, then move on to entrée and a nice glass of wine, then dessert. It’s nice to sit down for a long dinner and just reconnect! We also love trying new restaurants too!
