She knew she wanted to be a pediatric dentist after attending a mobile Children’s clinic during dental school. From there on out she wanted to ensure that children would not fear the dentist. She recently opened a second location Pediatric Smiles of Orange in the city of Orange, where she continues keeping our kids confident and comfortable during their dental visits with behavioral management. Dr. Suarez Martinez specializes in dental care for children, young adults, and individuals with special needs. Can you please share a bit about your family and why you have chosen to raise them in Orange County?
I have been blessed to be married to my husband Zach for 23 years. We have two boys Caleb and Zachary. We have lived in Orange County for 24 years. I moved to Orange County right after my Pediatric dental residency for a job opportunity. I fell in love with South Orange county and my husband and I decided to stay and raise our family. It was a no brainer! We loved the beach, weather and all the activities bestowed upon our children and we are Native Californians. Our boys played club Ice Hockey in Orange County and eventually played for their respective high schools. Both my husband and I are active in the Orange county community in our respective careers.
When did you know that you wanted to be a pediatric dentist?
During dental school, I quickly realized in my second year adult dentistry wasn’t for me. I was a bit animated for the adult crowd! I was asked to attend a mobile clinic for children on a Saturday. I attended and found my niche. I enjoyed every minute of the behavioral management. My focus was always how can I make this little child not fear the dentist. I went every Saturday for 3 months! I developed my own style of techniques and it worked! The kids were looking forward to seeing me every Saturday. I now use all those techniques learned via 23 years of experience and apply them today! I enjoy every aspect of Pediatric dentistry from the minute the kids walk in the door.
Why did you choose to practice dentistry in Orange County?
I chose to practice dentistry in Orange county in view of the fact, it is filled with families and has a sense of community. I loved seeing each family and now seeing those families’ grandbabies. It has been such an honor to be here.
Tell us more about what type of dentistry you practice? And what makes your practice different and how to you ensure children with special needs have a good dental experience?
I am a Pediatric dentist that specializes in many procedures but my main one is behavioral management. As soon as the child walks through that door, we want to promote a safe and fun environment for the kids! We have a game room, TV’s on the ceiling and a treasure chest full of toys. We have experienced Registered dental assistants that have treated kids for over 10 years. They have a vast knowledge of techniques geared toward making the kids feel comfortable for their first visit and cleaning. My internship included a year at Rancho Los Amigos with exclusively special needs patients. Myself and the office are equipped with treating and assisting these patients to be successful in a dental setting.
What would be the one tip you would give us Moms to help us prepare our children for dental visits?
My favorite tip for the moms is to get a book about going to the dentist. There are so many great children’s books with photos. I tell them to read it to their child a whole week before coming. Children are very visual and retain information if it’s repetitive. Sadly, most parents have had a bad childhood experience going to the dentist. For these parents, we tell them to stay positive and I promise their child will have a better experience. Children can feel their parents’ anxiety. We will make it as seamless as possible.
How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Maintaining a work-health balance is a challenge at times especially when you’re the owner. I never take work home with me so I can focus on our family. I take walks with my two dogs. I travel to visit both our son’s colleges for football and ice hockey games. I like to read and LOVE attending movie theaters. If you don’t see me in the office chances are I am eating popcorn at a movie theater.
Tell us one fun fact about you?
One fun fact! I always wanted to be in beauty pageants. I never did join one in my younger years BUT when I turned 40 years old my husband encouraged me to join so I did! I was Mrs. South Orange County for Mrs. California America. I won Mrs. Congeniality 2 years in a row. I was also named Mrs. Outstanding married woman of the year. It was such a great experience. I met wonderful, accomplished and well rounded women.
Where is your favorite date night spot with your husband?
Favorite date night with my husband is the movie theater. I love movies
